From Old French adjectif , from Latin adiectīvum , from ad ( “ ‘ next to’ ” ) + -iect- , perfect passive participle of iaciō ( “ ‘ throw’ ” ) + -īvus , adjective ending; hence, a word "thrown next to" a noun, modifying it.
