Borrowed from French débris, itself from dé- 'de-' + bris 'broken, crumbled', or from Middle French debriser 'to break apart', from Old French debrisier, itself from de- + brisier, bruisier 'to break', ult. of Patrono:Gem[[Category:Patrono:Gem derivations|Debris]] origin, from Proto-Germanic *brūsianan (to crush, break) from Proto-Indo-European *bhrous- (to break, crumble). Akin to Old English brȳsan "to crush, bruise". More at bruise.
