Middle English hed, from Old English hēafod, from Proto-Germanic *xauƀuðan (cf. Dutch hoofd, German Haupt, Swedish huvud), from Proto-Indo-European *káput 'head' (cf. Irish ceann, Latin caput, Sanskrit kabúcchala 'nape hair, shorthairs'), variant of Proto-Indo-European *kapōlo 'head, bowl' (cf. Old English hafola 'head', Sanskrit kapāla 'cup, bowl, skull').
